Today’s speaker was John Wilson, past district governor and long-time Rotarian who has held multiple responsible positions within the organization. John gave us an overview of the Rotary Foundation.
The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary International, a global service organization with more than 1.4 million members across over 200 countries. Established in 1917, the Foundation's mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through improvements in health, education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The Foundation concentrates its work in six core areas: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. Its most celebrated achievement is its role in the global campaign to eradicate polio — a decades-long partnership with the World Health Organization and other global health bodies that has reduced polio cases by more than 99% since 1988.
Among its key programs are Rotary Peace Fellowships, which fund graduate education for emerging peace and conflict resolution leaders, and Global Grants, which support large-scale international humanitarian and scholarship projects. Funded entirely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and supporters worldwide, the Foundation has distributed more than $4 billion to humanitarian causes since its founding.
It is consistently recognized by independent charity watchdog organizations for its financial transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the vast majority of funds raised go directly to program activities (4 Stars from Charity Navigator, their highest rank for efficiency).
