Today’s speaker was Delia Hamlet, Republican candidate for ward 1, Summit City Council. Her fellow Republican candidate, Jamel Boyer, the ward 2 candidate, was unavailable to attend due to a work-related conflict. We will host the Democratic candidates on October 26th.
Ms. Hamlet briefly introduced her background: she attended the University of Pittsburgh, served in the U.S. Army, and is a longtime Summit resident who raised three children, all of whom attend or graduated from Summit schools. She also serves on the Summit Planning Board, the School Board of Estimate, the Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties, and the Bridges Outreach board. From 2023 through 2025, she served one three-year term on the Summit Common Council.
Ms. Hamlet cited her involvement in various organizations and her recent council experience as qualifications for her candidacy. She also thanked her opponent for helping keep the campaign more civil than her 2022 race. She then opened the floor for questions.
There were a lot of questions. The first was about her understanding of where the City stood in its Mount Laurel obligations. This is a complicated issue, and Ms. Hamlet gave a detailed recap of the key factors leading up to the current fourth round, the settlement of two lawsuits and dismissal of a third, and the City’s plan to potentially approve at least one project to begin meeting its requirements through 2035. Another questioner asked about national politics and Ms. Hamlet stated that national politics simply has no place in Summit’s politics. A third questioner asked about some of her most important learning experiences from her prior term on Council – she replied that it was probably the experience of serving as City representative to the Joint Meeting of Essex & Union Counties which is a regional wastewater utility. Other questions involved the City’s AAA bond rating (need more rateables), speeding on city streets, sidewalk construction and traffic lights, etc.
